What Is A Class A Motorhome?
Let’s take a second to define a motorhome. Motorhomes are RVs that contain their own drivetrain and fuel source, which distinguishes them from towable RVs that require a towing vehicle like a half-ton truck to transport them around. A motorhome is essentially a very large truck with its own living space that can be incorporated with the driving cab or separated from it.
Class A motorhomes are one of the three motorhome styles available and they’re often the largest ones with the most amenities. They somewhat resemble busses with their flat fronts and panoramic windshields. The cab is generally open to the rest of the living space, with swiveling chairs that allow easy access to the rest of the vehicle. These motorhomes come with the best amenities available, with full-size residential appliances, modern electronics and roomy beds. You’ll never be uncomfortable or wanting for space in a Class A!
How To Drive A Motorhome
Driving a motorhome, particularly one as large as a Class A, is something of a challenge for those accustomed to typical passenger cars and trucks. You will likely want to get in some practice behind the wheel before you set out on your first adventure in your new Class A motorhome. The vehicle’s center of gravity is much higher which can increase wind resistance and make it more vulnerable to tipping at high speeds, so you’ll need to go slower than you might be used to when on the highway.
Class A motorhomes also use air brakes which differ from typical hydraulic brakes in that they require constant, even pressure applied over several seconds to activate and bring the vehicle to a complete halt. With the sheer length and weight of a Class A, it can be harder to stop them, so you’ll need to adjust how you move in traffic. This means increasing the following distance between you and other cars and avoiding changing lanes. When you practice in an empty lot, work on braking, reversing and turning skills until you’re confident in your abilities.
