Ready to ditch the tow vehicle? Choosing a motorhome as your next RV can be a more convenient way to get a more relaxing and luxurious camping experience. We’ve provided some background information for some fun tidbits and important considerations to keep in mind while you’re shopping for a motorhome at Carolina Coach & Marine.
History
While some people trace the history of RVs back to covered wagons, the first true RVs as you might recognize them today came about in the 1910s and 1920s, which is around the time the first motorhomes started popping up. In 1910, Pierce-Arrow Motor Company brought the Touring Landau to the Madison Square Garden Auto Show. It was essentially a car with additional space for storage, comfortable seating, and even a fold-down sink.
A decade later, manufacturers started converting trucks and buses into “housecars” with some of the more modern amenities you might be accustomed to seeing nowadays. The term “motorhome” was first used in 1958 by Raymond Frank, who first built a personal vehicle for his family before designing models that he sold to others.
From there, the motorhome market exploded as many of today’s biggest names started getting their foot in the door. The industry took a serious blow during the gas crunch of the 1970s, but you wouldn’t know it by today’s standards. In 2014, 43,900 motorhomes were sold in the United States alone, as Carolina Coach & Marine is proud to be part of this thriving industry.
Benefits
There are a lot of reasons to choose a motorhome. Firstly, you should know that the most basic, defining factor of a motorhome is that they’re completely contained, complete with drivetrain and fuel tank. This means that, rather than hooking them up to another vehicle to get from one place to another, you can drive the motorhome itself around. A lot of campers prefer avoiding the hitching hassle, leading them to choose motorhomes.
Another great benefit is the range of choices you’ll have. Motorhomes come in all shapes and sizes, from some of the smaller, van-style models to the giant, flat-front rigs that can be even 40-feet long. This also means you can get a variety of features inside your ideal motorhome, whether you just want the bare minimum or something a little more luxurious. Not to mention, you’ll probably find it at a price that fits your budget.
