The RV Toilet Seal

The Purpose:

  • Keeps water inside the camper toilet.
  • Keeps black water tank odors inside the black tank.

The Problem:

The RV toilet seal can get hardened or can dry out. This often leads to a water leak and an increase in unpleasant smells.

The DIY Toilet Maintenance Solution:

Wear rubber gloves and apply plumber's grease to the seal. This adds lubrication so that the water will come back into the bowl.

The Holding Tank Sensor

The Purpose:

  • Let you know when the tank is empty, half full, and so on.

The Problem:

The sensor can give false readings. For example, it can show the tank as full even though it was recently emptied. This is usually caused by residue sticking to the sensor.

The DIY Toilet Maintenance Solution:

Add a few trays of ice into the RV toilet. The ice cubes will help knock around anything that is lodged inside the tank. The cubes will then melt and should clear the sensors of residue.

Without proactive maintenance, the tank can face unnecessary wear and a shortened lifespan. This can result in expensive (but preventable) repairs or parts replacement.

Do regular tank treatments. These help break down waste and toilet paper. They also help result in a cleaner rinse when pumping out the tank. You can use products that are in liquid or drop-in form, which help serve as treatments and deodorizers.

The Toilet Paper

The Problem:

Using the wrong toilet paper can harm the RV septic system. It can result in a host of issues, from causing false readings in the holding tank sensor or even breaking the septic system.

The DIY Toilet Maintenance Solution

The simplest approach is to always purchase camper-friendly toilet paper. There are many products on the market built specifically with RV toilets in mind.

Another option is to use a toilet paper of your choice and check that it is dissolving properly. If it is not, then you will need to switch to a different product.
